My ISP provides monitoring, why should I sign up for the elkMonitor service ?

elkMonitor provides an objective and distributed testing service. An ISP which monitors your site will only assure that your site is available from their network, due to the distributed nature of elkMonitor's servers we can help assure you your site is available to users throughout the US and abroad. elkMonitor also provides more than just up/down monitoring as is typical with ISP's monitoring services. elkMonitor's performance and monitoring data can be used to verify any Service Level Agreement (SLA) you may have with your hosting provider.

I host my own servers and can monitor from my own network, why should I sign up for the elkMonitor service ?

Monitoring from your internal network won't detect problems or failures with your connectivity which would affect the ability of users to connect to your servers. The outsourced nature of the elkMonitor service also means you don't need to dedicate any hardware or personnel to your monitoring operations providing potential cost savings. Also as technologies advance, Elk Fork Technologies will provide additional monitoring types and services. You'll be able to take advantage of these technologies without having to dedicate any development resources.

Do I have to make any changes to my site ?

No, we do not require any changes to your site or any software to be installed. As a result your website can run on any operating system and with any web server software.

How does it work ?

Our monitoring servers are located across the US and Europe and enable us to provide you with both monitoring and performance data for your site. In the event a server can't reach your site it will check with our other servers to verify if they can reach the site, if they can't then we'll send an alert based on your notification settings.

What types of applications/services can you monitor ?

We currently support monitoring web servers via HTTP and HTTPS protocols as well as FTP, POP3, SMTP, NNTP and DNS servers. If you are interested in monitoring additional services please let us know as we plan to add additional monitors based on user request.

How can you notify me in the event of an alert ?

We currently support Email, Short Message Service (SMS) alerts and Pager notifications. Specifically for pagers we support pagers accessible via email, SMS alerts, the industry standard TAP Pager protocol and numeric pagers.

Will your monitoring service affect the performance of my site?

No, the elkMonitor service will add a load similar to a user's browser hitting your site.

What's with the Elk name ?

Elk Fork Technologies, Inc. is named after Elk Fork Creek which runs near our offices in Western North Carolina. We don't actually monitor or own any elk :-)
